As a family, we’re currently staying (house sitting) in France. We’re blessed with long, hot, summer days and are always on the lookout for a local day- or evening trip to explore the area we stay in, but it’s a challenge to find something which suits our budget, as our South African currency isn’t very strong now – to say the least!
We read about the evening markets, which you’re more likely to find during the summer months. They’re very popular under locals and tourists, and usually comes with great food, wine, atmosphere and local live music.
We absolutely loved the evening market (Marché Nocturnes) in Audrix. Audrix is a commune in the Dordogne department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France, with a population of less than 300 people!
We arrived just before 6pm, and a very organized team was busy setting up the tables, chairs and sound equipment, while the vendors were busy getting their stalls ready. Everybody was welcoming and friendly, and the locals started to gather around the tables at about 6:30pm, with tourists arriving about an hour later. So, if you want one of the best spots at the tables – arrive early!
Some people brought their own picnic baskets and wine (there are designated areas where you’re allowed to have your own food and drinks) and others preferred to sit at the tables and buy food from the vendors at the market. Most of them brought their own tablecloths, cutlery and crockery. (They also have plates, cutlery and glasses available at the market should you not take your own.)
The stalls had anything from Snails to Roasted Meat & Vegetables, Strawberries & Cream, Waffles, Ice-Cream and a good selection of Wines.
Later the evening two locals entertained us with live music, and people literally danced to their tune as they walked around between the tables and played their accordions.
We found that this was the perfect way to get to mingle with locals, have a great fun evening out (with no entrance fee), experience a local atmosphere and taste some delicious local food. The kids also loved it, and it’s a family friendly environment for those travelling with kids. Reuben even made new friends – who couldn’t speak English, but who needs English when you can play in any language!
It was a lovely evening, with the most breathtaking views, in a pretty little French Town called Audrix.
