When we decided to house and pet sit while we travel the world, we knew that we were a bit “unconventional”, but we never thought that we’d ever come across any unconventional pets along the way!
I must say, Brian is by far the most unconventional pet we ever had to sit – so far! When we applied for the house sit in Mauritius, we knew about the two dogs, Berta and Beate (a dog using a wheelchair!) – as well as Danny and Errol, the cats. However – upon arrival, we were told about Brian too.
One of our “responsibilities” are to collect snails from the garden (there are hundreds of them every morning!) and relocate them to a stream close by. Reuben thinks it’s loads of fun because we get to take them away on the golf cart.
Just before they left, the owner asked us to PLEASE look out for Brian, the snail with the red tipped shell, because he is their “pet” snail and they don’t relocate him, he stays around – he appears every now and then and disappears again for a few weeks.
We were very curious about this “red tipped pet snail” and were wondering (and hoping) whether we’ll get to see him during our 5 week visit.
Two days ago, Brian made his appearance! We were all very cautious not to put him in the “relocation bucket” and took some photos of this very special pet snail. Afterwards we heard that he got his name from the cartoon “The Magic Roundabout“.
We’ve had fish, cats, dogs and chickens to pet sit previously, so Brian was definitely the most unconventional pet to date – looking forward to see what we come across next!
